"....the Rhine cuts deeply into the Rhenish slate mountains, meandering between hillside castles and steep fields of grapes to create a magical mixture of wonder and legend. Idyllic villages appear around each bend, their neat half-timbered houses and proud church steeples seemingly plucked from the world of fairy tales." (Lonely planet guide book). We spent the day traveling the valley between Koblenz and Bingen, going south on the west side of the river and then taking a short ferry ride to return north on the east side.
