Augsburg

We started out our day in Augsburg, being inspired by the example of Jakob Fugger the Rich who founded the Fuggerei in1521 as a social settlement for needy citizens of the city. The annual rent is still the equivalent of what a trade person would make in a week at that time (about .8 Euro) plus heating costs. Currently 150 people live here in 140 apartments in 67 buildings. The Fuggerei is touted as the oldest social settlement in the world and the one with the most continuity, still financed exclusively through an endowment. What is truly amazing is that descendants of the original founders immediately committed to financing its rebuilding after Allied bombs destroyed much of it in 1944.
