Mary and I spent the day visiting the Buchenwald Memorial. The concentration camp was built in 1937 and more than 250,000 people were imprisoned here before the camp was liberated on April 11, 1945. Since we visited on April 12, there were many flowers left from the observance of its liberation. Over 56,000 people died here and prisoners from more than 50 different nations were imprisoned here. The art exhibit, showing art produced by prisoners during their time here and after their release, as well as more recent art memorializing what happened here, really touched us.
The clock on the main watchtower is permanently set at 3:15 - the time of liberation.
Memorial on the left is to the murdered Sinti and Roma peoples. Memorial on the right is to the Jewish peoples; it takes the look of a quarry since Jews in the camp were given the worst jobs and many lost their lives working in the quarries.
The inscription on the gate - "Jedem das Seine - to each his own.
